Our Retreat at Mercy by the Sea for the Homeless

We gathered again this September at Mercy by the Sea in Madison CT, for our annual retreat for the homeless men of Bridgeport. Our theme this year was images of God. We explored a variety of different ways to experience God through the images evoked in art, nature, sound and emotions. We also discussed our images of God, and how we can go about letting go of negative God-images from our past, and move toward a healthier more intimate friendship with Christ.

Time Together and Time to Reflect

The closing celebration included a movie complete with pop-corn and beverages. We watched “Miracle”- the story of the 1980 Olympic hockey team’s unlikely victory over the Soviet Union at the Lake Placid games. The men found this film quite inspirational and we discussed the themes of team-work, community, and what belief in the impossible can accomplish when we work together.

After the movie, men enjoyed a relaxing time with private rooms, good conversation, great food and plenty of rest. Many of the guys mentioned they did not want to leave.

Examining Our Faith and Spiritual Lives

I was personally inspired by the diversity of life experience gathered there, and the depth of their faith and spiritual lives despite the extreme hardship, emotional, and physical suffering these men endure on a daily basis.

We are Grateful

Sr. Eileen Boffa, who is a Connecticut Sister of Mercy  and I are deeply grateful for the men of Men’s Ministry who so generously donated funds to make this retreat possible for the marginalized among us.

Blessings,
Bob
