Remembering Pope Francis

As the papal Conclave convenes this week, we anticipate the appointment of a new Pope and leader of the Catholic Church. We also take time to remember and reflect on the legacy of Jorge Mario Bergoglio- Pope Francis.

Pope Francis, the first Jesuit and Latin American Pope, passed away peacefully at the age of 88 on April 21, 2025. He was known for his approachable demeanor, his dedication to the poor and marginalized, and his passion and calls for peace and justice. His papacy was marked by a focus on renewal, compassion and outreach. He brought the Church closer to the people with a willingness to address difficult issues with compassion.

Francis was widely admired for his humble and accessible style, often driving in plain cars and choosing to live simply. He emphasized the Church’s responsibility to serve the poor and marginalized, stating his desire for a “poorer Church, for the poor He tirelessly appealed for peace and justice, particularly addressing conflicts and humanitarian crises. He highlighted the urgent need for environmental protection and stewardship, urging a shift towards a sustainable future. He fostered dialogue within the Church and with other faiths, seeking to bridge divides and promote understanding. He consistently reminded the world of the importance of compassion, mercy, and humility as central to Christian faith.
